How I Run My Love and Logic Classroom

I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.

smile

Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for someone else.

smile

If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.

smile

If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.

smile

What I do, will depend on the special person, and the special situation.

smile

If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, "I'm not sure that's fair," and we will talk.

Please practice these lettes/sounds and words at home. You can make or buy a set of flash cards! Here are some ideas:

  • Skill Drill!
  • Have your child trace the word or letter with their finger in shaving cream, sugar, sand, or in the air.
  • Write the letter or word with pencils, markers, crayons, pens, glitter pens, magnet letters, or glue.
  • Play the "I Spy" game using color words. For example, insead of saying "I spy something orange"...say "I spy something that spells O-R-A-N-G-E." It might help if you spell the word on a piece of paper.
  • Play the memory game with flash cards - turn them over and find the match - you have to say/spell the letter/word.
  • Play go fish. "Mommy, do you have the word 'see'?"
  • Rainbow words: chant the word, then spell it by stomping, clapping, and snapping. Next, have them use a crayon to spell the word on a piece of paper. Do this three times with one word. We practice this activity in class all the time! Ask your child to show you the activity.
  • Pumping Iron – With each letter, act as if you’re pumping some heavy iron!  Show some muscles at the end and say the word!
  • Magic Pencil – Write each letter as you say it with your magic pencil in the air.
  • Hula-Hoop – Hands on your hips, swivel each letter!  At the end, throw your hands in the air and say the word.
  • Opera – Stand nice and tall with your chest out and sing each letter opera style!
  • Box it – Take your boxing stance and punch each word.
  • Yo-Yo – Throw your pretend yo-yo up and down with each letter.
  • Funny Voices – Say the letters in a LOUD voice, a quiet voice, a whisper, a squeaky mouse voice, a big monster voice, etc.
  • Blast Off – Start crouched near the floor and with each letter get a little bit taller.  Jump in the air and say the word when you’re done.
  • Frog Jumps – The opposite of blast off, start standing and with each letter bend to get shorter.  When you’re done, jump in the air and say the word.
  •  Be the Letter – As you say each letter, try to make it with your body.
  • Mexican Hat Dance - With your hands on your hips, alternate your feet in front as you say each letter.
  • Military - March each letter and salute when you say the word.
  • Clap it – Clap each letter and then clap each syllable when you say the word.
  •  ExplosionWith each letter starting at a whisper, your voice gets louder and louder until BOOM!  You yell the word.
  • Exercise – Do a sit up, jumping jack, toe touch, etc with each letter.
  •  Batter Up Take your batting position and swing as you say each letter.  Homerun when you say the word!
  •  Dribble and Shoot Dribble each letter and take your shot when you say the word.
  • Cowboy – Pretend to throw your lasso with each letter.
  • Blowing Kisses – Alternating right and left hands, blow kisses on each letter.  On the word, throw the kiss with both hands!

Guided Reading Books and Homework

Guided reading books will be sent home by the 2nd six weeks.

I hope you are enjoying our guided reading books! Here are a few notes regarding these books:

  1. Read these books as often as you can! The more your child reads a familiar text, the better their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
  2. Please return these books on time. If the book is sent home on Monday, please return it on Wednesday. If the book is sent home on Tuesday, please return it on Thursday.
  3. These books come in sets. So when one is not returned, the set becomes unusable. If you happen to lose a guided reading book, please send $10 to replace it. However, the money does not fully cover the cost of replacing the entire set. The best option for the leveled library is to find the book.
  4. You will receive two books. One book is on your child's independent level, and one is on her/his instructional level. The book on their independent level has not been practiced in class. The book on their instructional level has been practiced in class many times. Please note how your child is doing on both of these books. We review and value your input!
  5. You will receive a homework page as well. In addition to the guided reading books, your child will also be receiving a homework page. This will be due when their guided reading books are due.
  6. The guided reading books and homework page will be placed in your child's book pocket. The book pocket is located in the back of your child's communication binder.
  7. Comprehension is very important! When your child finishes a guided reading book, or any book, close the book and ask your child to start at the beginning and tell you everything they remember. Listen for your child to use character names and include all events and details in sequential order.
